We are living during a time of great awakening and new understanding. Many western yoga students are beginning to ask the questions of what are the roots of yoga, and how can I learn from this wisdom tradition that does not have its origins in the west? When did the word "yoga" first appear and what did it look like thousands of years ago compared to today? How can modern-day yogis and yoginis use the teachings from Patañjali's Yoga Sutras and The Bhagavad Gita (one of India's most beloved yoga texts) to walk more consciously through life? If you are curious about the history and evolution of yoga as well as some of its sacred texts and traditions from the classical and post-classical eras, please join us for thoughtful contemplation and lively discussion! Come bask in jñāna yoga (the path of knowledge) at 4pm and stay for restorative at 5pm to let the ideas soak in.
There will be a different topic and text to explore each month, should you choose to dive further into your own swādhyāya (self-study)!
No charge to attend, donations accepted. Proceeds will be shared between group discussion organizer Heather Acomb and various non-profit organizations such as Prasad Project, American India Foundation, and charities providing health and medical care to India. This is a great opportunity to learn more about the history and philosophies of yoga, Indian culture and spirituality, and also feel connected to a greater cause that gives back to India.
*A note about the word Satsang: can be translated as "in the company of truth". A satsang is a curious and inclusive community of people invested in spiritual dialogue and cultivating a sense of deep understanding through yoga.
